The Home Stretch
After dithering about a bit in Cheyenne (a much smaller town than I had expected) with no change in the road conditions, Mel and I decided to take a bit of a gamble. Mel had found a smaller road through Medicine Bow National Forest that roughly paralleled the 80 into Laramie (it joined the 80 about 10 miles short of Laramie). Our last check of road closures had seen it removed from the list, so we decided to give it a shot. If it was closed at the far end, we figured, we could just turn around and head back.
We drove though some absolutely gorgeous farm country, then up into the forest. The road was indeed open, though the fog was so thick you could barely see the front of the hood. After some very cautious navigating and encourageed by traffic heading the opposite direction, we eventually made our way through to Laramie. The quest can continue!
We had dinner with Ben in SLC at the lovely Market Street Grill, which included drinks without any sort of 'Social Club' membership - perhaps my understanding of the laws here is wrong. At any rate, we spent the night at Ben's house and are now about to start the final leg of our drive. Mel and I were consistently awed by the country between Cheyenne and SLC - if you ever get the chance, it's a beautiful drive.
