This just in: New Hope for BlackBerry 8700 Users
Probably the most common question I get about the modem script I wrote for the BlackBerry Pearl is "Does this work for the 87xx"? Sadly, the answer has always been no - the 8700 series doesn't have the proper Bluetooth profiles for a simple modem script like mine to work.
That is, however, until now. Someone over at the BlackBerry forums has reported success with an 8700g and the standard modem script. The secret? He upgraded his BlackBerry to OS 4.2, which apparently adds the proper DUN profile to enable simple, painless tethering via bluetooth. Now, I've only heard from one person, and upgrading your OS is a rather drastic step to take (especially if your carrier hasn't released a customized version for your device yet!), but if anyone out there decides to take the plunge let me know!

i can confirm that following the same steps works on an 8700c upgraded to os 4.2. i was able to connect successfully and brows a few pages.
speed left a little to be desired but there are 100's of reasons for that.
however once i disconnected after the initial try i have been unable to succesfully connect again. not sure why.
@Scurvey Dog - Sorry to hear that! Just to confirm, restarting your phone doesn't solve the problem?
Looking at the log snippet you posted here, it looks like Cingular's head-end equipment isn't responding to your Mac's request for an IP address. There are a couple of reasons why this might happen: weak signal, a crowded cell, or Cingular playing games with tethering users. (I'll assume you don't have the (ridiculously expensive) data plan that allows tethering.)
Try resetting your phone and let me know if it helps. It's definitely possible the script needs some tweaking to work with the 8700.
I am having the same issue. Worked the first time, but after that no dice. I have reset the phone (turned off power), reset bluetooth (repaired the computer and 8700), and even reinstalled the OS. Only reinstalling the OS worked (I was able to get back on once like before).
folks,
any luck here? same problem... i have tried the pulse modem script, that works even less. with the blackberry 8100 script, at least i was able to get on once...
shall we start a bounty?

The new BB OS 4.2 v101 has a DUN capabilities now. However there is not a Modem Script for the 8700. I was able to modify a script that gets me as far as authentication, but I can't get past that. If there is anyone you know of that can help, I would be happy to send them what I have.
thank you so much for your suggestions!
